An Ecological Approach to Study the Subjective Well - Being of the Disabled Eldery

Sohn Hwa-Hee
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the selected predictors of the subjective well-being of the disabled elderly over the age of sixty five in Sungbukgu, Seoul. The study was approached from an ecological perspective in that the individual elderly¢¥s characteristics(i.e. self-esteem, introversion-extraversion and socio-demographic characteristics), and their environments such as microsystem(i. e. close relationship with their grand-children and adult children, filial piety ¢¥Hyo¢¥ and living with adult children) and exosystem(i.e. residential area) are explored. A structured questionnaire was used to interview a sample of 131 elderly. The hierarchical regression analysis yielded the results that the magnitude of the importance of the individual characteristics was found to be larger than any other systems investigated. The most powerful predictors of the subjective well-being of the elderly were the individual characteristics such as ¢¥extraversion¢¥, ¢¥self-esteem¢¥, the next were ¢¥filial piety ¢¥Hyo¢¥¢¥ and ¢¥close relationship with adult children¢¥ factors in that order. Thus, in addition to the individual characteristics, the family system such as the close relationship with adult children and filial piety ¢¥Hyo¢¥ must be taken into consideration, if the intervention is planned to improve the subjective well-being of the disabled elderly. The research model accounted for 46% of the subjective well-being of the disabled elderly.
